Change is the only constant factor in this world. And truly, not only fashion, technology or the cultures changes, but also language, words and the meaning of words also change with time. Words acquire a new meaning or a new definition. You must be wondering what I am talking!!!
Well, haven’t the meaning of Office Space also changed in the last one decade, specially? Come to think of it, it has. Till late eighties of even early nineties, Office Space was an independent area completely devoted to the work, where one would go and be there from 9 to 5. You own it, operate from it and manage it solely.
With shrinking budgets and space, Office Space has acquired a whole new definition. Today, Office Space can be a corner of your room, can be a corner of your house or can be
a room in a big building or a whole floor.
The shortage of space has forced the companies to look at the old heritage buildings or the existing structure which can be renovated and customized to their own use. Alternatively, lot of companies in the business of retail real estate, purchase the old building and cut the cubicles and small offices and then further sell or rent them.
Malls are also not far behind. They come with complete infrastructure set up like power management, security, theft and fire management and thus become an ideal Office Space for upper end businesses or multi national companies.
A lot of companies are thus now purchasing or leasing the Office Spaces in such big building where they share not only the building but a floor or even a room with the other companies. Not a long back there was a report in the newspaper where a floor was being used during day time by a content management company and during night by a call centre company catering to the US market.
The spaces have shrunk. Just as we no longer carry bulky files but smart electronic notepads to office, same way, owning a building or a floor is not necessarily the idea of an office.
Just as to me, my small 3 ft by 1.5 ft table with internet connection and laptop is my office.
